Making medical doctors: science and medicine at Vanderbilt since Flexner

نویسنده

  • John M. Flexner
چکیده

potency, induction, competence, and regulation were widely used as categories ofexplanation in this period. Now, when we have the technical means to investigate the inner workings of cells, this heritage is available not as a set of explanations but as a set of problems requiring solution. Probably no one did more in this vital task than Johannes Holtfreter, who receives extensive coverage in the second half of the book. His in vitro isolation experiments and his work on the regional specificity of neural induction particularly helped to define the style and standard of experimental embryology for decades to come. Hamburger's book really finishes at the Second World War, although one or two later experiments are described. The modern era, starting with Nieuwkoop's discovery of mesoderm induction, is not covered. So this is not really a book for those who want to understand amphibian development, but rather a lucid and interesting account of a critical period in scientific history. It has a special fascination because it is written by a participant who can not only tell us what happened, but also what it felt like at the time.

Dedicated issue on rural health: inspiration, celebration, and a challenge for the future.

Rural America needs family doctors. Not only does it need more doctors, it needs family doctors that are well trained, enthusiastic, and committed to rural careers—careers that present both challenges and joys distinct from those of their urban colleagues. As the vast majority of physicians in small towns are family physicians, America depends on family medicine educators to identify, recruit, ...

Early bedside care during preclinical medical education: can technology-enhanced patient simulation advance the Flexnerian ideal?

Flexner wanted medical students to study at the patient bedside-a remarkable innovation in his time-so that they could apply science to clinical care under the watchful eye of senior physicians. Ever since his report, medical schools have reserved the latter years of their curricula for such an "advanced" apprenticeship, providing clinical clerkship experiences only after an initial period of i...

The essential role of basic science in medical education: the perspective from psychology.

Probably ever since the Flexner report endowed basic scientists with a central role in the education of doctors, the same basic scientists have been engaged in active, but circular, debates about why basic science really is essential to medical education. The arguments are generally at the theological level and can easily be dismissed by critics as self-serving. There is little evidence in the ...

A hundred years of basic science in medical education

For a century, we have been trying to integrate basic science into medical education, beginning with the Flexner report. Flexner, a high school teacher, an outsider to the practice of medicine and medical education, was commissioned to re-evaluate the medical education system [1]. He was chosen for his expertise as an educator, having critiqued the American schooling system and having explored ...
